The PDO mark – Protected Designation of Origin – as defined by Regulation (EU) No. 1151/2012, identifies a product originating in a specific place, region or country, whose quality or characteristics are essentially or exclusively due to a particular geographical environment and its inherent natural and human factors, and whose production steps all take place in the defined geographical area.

Only those productions that demonstrate a well-established and codified production tradition, an inseparable link with their territory of origin, an adequate socio-entrepreneurial fabric, and that manage to achieve high quality standards, certified by third-party control bodies, can aspire to obtain and retain the coveted EU recognition and simultaneous registration in the European register of PDO products.

Italy is the European country with the largest number of agri-food products with designation of origin (PDO) and geographical indication (PGI) recognised by the European Union. This is important proof of the great quality of our production, but above all of the strong link between Italian agri-food excellences and their territory of origin.
At the same time, thanks to EU certification, consumers are given greater guarantees, with a higher level of traceability and food safety than other products.
