OP LATIUM’s agronomic technical staff will carry out a restoration pruning intervention on Palombara Sabina’s thousand-year-old olive tree ([i]U’Liv\u00f2[\/i]), in collaboration with Coldiretti Palombara Sabina, the socio-cultural association “La Palombella”, and the Municipality of Palombara Sabina.
\nThe activity will take place on 22 February 2019, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.<\/p>\n[b]The great olive tree of Palombara Sabina[\/b]\nThe gigantic olive tree has been mentioned since ancient times for its majesty.
\nIn 1849, Antonio Nibby, in his historical-topographical-antiquarian analysis of the map of the surroundings of Rome, speaking of Palombara Sabina and the nearby fifteenth-century Convent of San Francesco, noted the imposing presence of this gigantic olive tree, located not far from the Palombara cemetery, probably the oldest specimen in all of Sabina.
\n“[i]In the olive grove that is crossed going from this convent towards the Terra there is an olive tree whose trunk, measured by me in the year 1823, had a circumference of 42 palms[\/i]”<\/p>\n

It is believed that this splendid tree belongs to the so-called [i]Salus alba[\/i] variety, today’s [i]Salviana[\/i], one of the ancient cultivars endemic to Sabina, like Carboncella and Procanica, which evolved through successive hybridisations over the centuries from an ancient ancestor.<\/p>\n

The tree’s estimated age is over 2,000 years and, before a cement mixer truck broke off and removed a fifth of its trunk a few decades ago, it measured over 12.50 metres in circumference at its widest point at the base and 8.50 metres at its narrowest point.<\/p>\n[url=http:\/\/www.sabinadop.it\/olivo-millenario-palombara-sabina.asp]The great olive tree of Palombara[\/url]\n
